My name is Marisa and I have a wonderful nephew (well, one of many) who went through a sort of traumatic event. His name is Xzavyer and he’s 17 years old. He was on a high school trip for his natural resources class. He was out in the heat when all of a sudden he felt dizzy and collapsed. He was taken by ambulance to the closest hospital and, according to EMTs, he had a seizure. He was given Keppra, an anti-seizure medication that pretty much knocked him out for the next 12 hours or so. He was unconscious, scaring his whole family, including myself. The hospital where he was taken is a pretty small rural hospital and they have limited resources, so he was airlifted to a bigger hospital where he was seen by a pediatric neurologist. When he finally returned to his normal mentation, he did not remember what happened but did have a bruised temple. The neurologist did not know for sure the cause of his acute seizure, but they blame it on the fact that he had an energy drink on an empty stomach. He is pretty much back to normal, but you can only imagine how astronomically large the hospital bill will be for his parents. He does have insurance, but of course, it won’t cover 100%.
