My Fight with Epilepsy – Supporting My Girls Through It All
Hi, my name is Latara Mays, and I’m reaching out during one of the hardest and most humbling seasons of my life.
I’m a 36-year-old single mother of four beautiful daughters, and anyone who truly knows me knows three things about me:
I love God
I’m strong-willed and independent
I keep my family first—always.
I’ve never been the type to ask for help. I don’t like handouts. I’m a hustler by nature. I’ve always figured things out. But recently, I was diagnosed with Epilepsy, and it changed everything.
I’ve actually been having seizures since I lost my father back in 2006. At first, they were random and manageable, but over time—with stress, grief, and just life—they started happening more often. Sometimes even when I was driving. That was when I knew something was seriously wrong.
I’ve had to leave my state job and take another position just to qualify for disability and still try to provide for my kids. I’m not allowed to drive anymore, and I’m now preparing for a neurological procedure to help doctors understand what’s happening inside my brain.
On top of that, my insurance—Blue Cross—requires me to cover 80% of my medical expenses out of pocket, and with reduced income, it’s become extremely hard to keep up with rent, bills, and other daily responsibilities. I keep going for my girls.
This fundraiser will help with:
• Medical expenses, procedures, and testing
• Household bills while waiting on disability
• Keeping my daughters active in school & sports
• Unexpected expenses as I adjust to this new reality
I still believe God has me covered. But I also know He sends help through people. So if you’re able to donate, I’m beyond grateful. If not, please share my story and keep me and my girls in your prayers.
This is not easy to write. But I believe I will come out of this stronger—and your support means the world.
With love and faith,
Latara Mays
