Hi! My name is X O’Neil. I’m a nonbinary musical artist and teacher living in Brooklyn, NY. I’m raising funds for a gender-affirming double mastectomy, also known as top surgery. If you would like to learn more about my story, I invite you to read further.
Ever since my chest started developing, something didn’t feel right. I thought it was the size of my chest that was the issue, so I got a breast reduction in 2019. Something still felt off… The pandemic in 2020 allowed me the space to get to know myself more, and it was during this time that I began exploring my gender identity and identifying as nonbinary. From using she/they, to they/she, I now stand comfortably using my they/them pronouns. My journey and life experiences have unveiled that it’s time to say goodbye to my current chest.
I’ve been in pursuit of having a gender-affirming double mastectomy for the past two years through NYU Langone. I’ve run into a number of hurdles since starting this process, including scheduling and communication with NYU, as well as obtaining the medical paperwork required to have this procedure covered by Medicaid. Now that my surgery date has finally been scheduled, the threat of Trump’s “big beautiful bill” looms over me and my surgery date. This bill could take away all gender-affirming care under Medicaid. Instead of remaining fearful and apprehensive about whether this surgery will be covered, I’ve decided to take action and organize my community together to put the power back into my hands. I’m trying to raise $10,000 to get this surgery done out of pocket, because I’m tired of waiting in the dark.
If my surgery is magically covered by Medicaid, I will use the money towards my aftercare, as I will be unable to work while recovering.
This will include:
- rent
- utilities
- food
- transportation to and from post-op exams
- recovery clothing, binders, and medical accessories
Any amount left over will be used towards seeking asylum overseas once fully recovered. Trump and his administration have made it abundantly clear that they are dedicated to making conditions as unsafe as possible for trans people in America. A financial safety net for relocation would mean having some peace of mind.
Thank you for reading this far. Any contribution amount is helpful, even if it’s just $5. Your generosity is greatly appreciated <3
