My name is Theresa, and I’m navigating a difficult chapter after being diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma and severely atypical cell growth in multiple areas. Last week, I underwent surgery under anesthesia to remove cancerous tissue from three parts of my body—my forearm, abdomen, and ankle. Recovery has been painful, especially the incision on my ankle, where the skin is already thin and strained. I’m managing the discomfort with over-the-counter medication, having chosen to avoid prescription painkillers.
I’m currently awaiting post-operative results to confirm whether all the cancer was successfully removed. Soon, I’ll begin digital skin mapping at NYU’s Perlmutter Cancer Center (yes, the same experts who developed the ABCDE system!). This advanced technology uses AI to detect any missed areas and track changes over time—ideally reducing the need for more invasive surgeries. I’m hopeful this means I won’t have to go under the knife again anytime soon.
Unfortunately, my high-deductible health plan leaves me responsible for significant out-of-pocket expenses, and some critical treatments—including digital mapping and scar therapy—aren’t fully covered by insurance. With support, I’m confident I can move through this recovery with strength, focus on healing, and step into a restorative and joy-filled summer!
That said, asking for help isn’t easy. I’ve always taken pride in being self-sufficient, but this experience has taught me how powerful and necessary community can be. Your support would mean the world as I work toward recovery and return to the health and wellness world I’ve long been passionate about.
With deep gratitude,
Theresa
