Help Us Get a Handicap-Accessible Vehicle for Shyne
Hi, my name is Alyce Shivers, and I am the proud grandmother and full-time guardian of my beautiful granddaughter, Shyne Shivers. Shyne is only 3 years old, but she has already endured more than most of us will in a lifetime.
Born prematurely at just 29 weeks on February 9, 2022, Shyne was diagnosed with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, a serious condition where fluid builds up in the brain. Since birth, she’s undergone nine surgeries, including the placement of a brain shunt to relieve pressure. Just recently, her shunt failed, and we’ve been in the ICU for the last few days facing yet another surgery.
Despite everything, Shyne is a fighter.
She requires round-the-clock care and sees multiple specialists each month—neurologists, a cardiologist, a GI doctor, ENT specialists, and more—mostly at Shriners Medical Center and UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. We live in Tracy, CA, which is about 90 minutes away, and without a reliable, handicap-accessible vehicle, it’s becoming nearly impossible to get her to her life-saving appointments.
Why We Need Your Help
Shyne cannot walk and uses a G-tube for feeding, a CPAP machine, a suction device, and oxygen support during naps and sleep. Her head is enlarged due to her condition, and she cannot hold it up on her own. Transportation in a regular car is extremely difficult and unsafe.
I’m doing everything I can to care for her and her mother, Elyce, who is also very ill. We survive on SSI and state assistance, but it’s not enough to afford a specialized vehicle.
That’s why I’m asking for help—not money for ourselves, but for a wheelchair-accessible van that can safely transport Shyne to and from her many appointments.
A Little About Me
I am a recovering alcoholic/addict and have been clean and sober for over three years. I attend recovery meetings every day and have found purpose in caring for my granddaughter. I’m also an active member of Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Stockton, CA, where I’ve worshipped for over seven years.
Taking care of Shyne is my greatest blessing. I’ve never left her side, and I won’t start now. But I need your help to continue this fight.
How You Can Help
We’re looking to raise funds for:
A wheelchair-accessible van
Any modifications necessary to accommodate Shyne’s medical equipment
Every donation, share, and prayer helps. If you can give, we are forever grateful. If not, please share our story with someone who might be able to help.
From the bottom of my heart—thank you.
With love and hope,
Alyce Shivers
