Hello. My name is Nathan Moore, and this is a true story about me and my kidneys. We are all born with two kidneys. God placed two kidneys in our bodies to help in the process of flushing out toxins that build up inside of us through a process called urination. Most of us live our entire lives without even thinking about how vital kidneys are to our survival, and that is the way God intended it to be. Unfortunately, sometimes a few of us have issues with our kidneys that make our bodies not function quite as well as intended, and in some extreme cases, our lack of kidney function can even lead to death.
I have a grandfather, a mother, and a twin brother named Jason. I love my family dearly, but they are the cause of my current ailment. My grandfather had a genetic disorder called Polycystic Kidney Disease, which he passed unknowingly on to my mother. My mother then unfortunately passed this disease on to myself and my twin brother Jason. Now this progressive disease has caused my kidneys to fail completely, and I struggle to live life as fully as I once did not so long ago.
What is Polycystic Kidney Disease? In non-medical jargon, the disease causes many cysts to form on and in the kidney itself, which in turn causes damage to the tissue and stops the kidneys’ ability to clear up the toxins and waste that build up in our bodies. If you are not one who gets squeamish easily, just search up Polycystic Kidneys on Google, and you can find some gnarly pictures of kidneys afflicted with this disease.
In February of this year, I lost all the functions of my kidneys. Since then, I have had to undergo multiple surgeries, including the insertion of a catheter in my chest and a fistula in my arm to be able to accept dialysis. In the last 5 months, my entire life has been turned upside down. I am literally hooked up to a dialysis machine 4 days a week to stay alive. Because of the time involved with dialysis, I have not been able to work (I am a middle school social-studies teacher), and with the lack of income and exorbitant bills being delivered to my mailbox, I have been dependent on my dwindling savings account for survival.
I have applied for social security disability, and that will help offset some of the expenses, but now I am reaching out to you. I’m a decent guy. I love my family and students, I just need a little help and if your heart tells you to and your wallet allows you to, I’m asking for a bit of help.
“Stay Golden”
Nathan
