On Thursday, June 5th, my mom was admitted to the ER for the second time in 33 days due to continued illness. Her symptoms were initially assumed to be residual to her previous colonic infection and sepsis, but were quickly discovered to be more pervasive. After a series of tests, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Shortly after, she was transported to Charlotte Medical Center and is currently in the Oncology unit, where she awaits chemotherapy treatment. Anticipated treatment will include at least a month of chemotherapy in-hospital with maintenance treatments to follow depending on how the leukemia responds. My family is doing our best, given this news, to curate a support system conducive to my mom’s treatment and recovery; unfortunately, this has required us to take multiple consecutive days from work. The medical bills, in addition to the continuing bills from everyday living, are daunting and a burden we are undoubtedly choosing to bear for my mom’s health. Any donation or help we may receive to lift some of this burden would be greatly appreciated!
