On May 5, 2025, a dear friend’s mother suffered a devastating stroke. Living alone and legally blind, she was incredibly fortunate to have made it outside where a neighbor noticed something was wrong and called for help. The stroke caused severe memory loss—so much so that she didn’t recognize herself or her family.
After not hearing from her for two days, concerned family members requested a welfare check. While she was thankfully found safe and receiving care in the hospital, what was discovered at her home was alarming. Since the pandemic, she had developed serious hoarding behaviors, and the home has deteriorated to the point of being unsafe and at risk of being condemned by the city.
A full home clean-out is scheduled for July. While the city will assist in removing items, they will charge the full cost to the 2026 property taxes—and they do not help with cleaning, repairs, or making the home livable again.
Her family is humbly asking for help to restore the home and provide a safe, clean, and comfortable space where she can continue her recovery. The needs include at least the following:
Deep cleaning of entire home, New cabinetry in the kitchen and bathroom, New flooring throughout the home, Fresh paint, A new refrigerator, A clean mattress and bedding, Stability and assistance railings, A wheelchair ramp, Professional pest control.
Unfortunately, there are no local or national assistance programs available for situations like this. The family even looked into the Hoarders TV show, but they are not currently taking applications.
Every dollar or donation helps. Whether you’re able to contribute financially, offer materials, or share this campaign, your support means the world. Please help this family bring their mother back to a safe and loving home where she can continue to heal.
