My husband is an independent electrician and has had the great privilege to work with an Amish builder named Levi for the past several years. He met Levi when he was doing work for a friend who was refurbishing his home. That friend got burned by his contractor during the construction process and got left hanging with unfinished work and a contractor who took his money and stopped returning his calls. Levi didn’t hesitate to help our friend complete the work on his home, without pushing our friend for the money the contractor never paid to Levi and his crew. Levi possesses a spirit of community and kindness that doesn’t waver.
Today we learned that two of his children were injured in a buggy accident less than a mile from their home. A tractor trailer struck the buggy when their pony was startled by traffic. Their daughter was treated for a broken collarbone and a concussion, while their son remains in the hospital being treated for a traumatic brain injury. The Amish don’t have medical insurance and rely on their community and church to help fund major medical bills. The impact of their son’s injuries and subsequent hospitalization is going to create a significant drain on their resources, so we decided to try and help by crowdfunding.
We’ve learned so much about the Amish community that Levi is part of, and it’s taught us how much they rely on and cherish community. We’ve had work done in our home by him and his family. We’ve learned how kind and loving Levi is with his kids when he worked at our home with his two oldest sons. We’re heartbroken that he is living through this tragedy and concerned that he has to not only worry about the health of his son but also feel the stress of paying for his care.
We’ve taken to fundraiser to reach out to friends to ask humbly for donations. We know there is a lot of uncertainty in the world and asking for donations for a stranger is a big ask, but community matters and Levi will be counting on community to help get him through this tragic event.
Any amount you could contribute would help ensure that Levi and his family are able to manage the often crushing medical debt people face when an unexpected tragedy happens.
Thank you so much if you’re able to donate and/or share this with others,
