On March 3, 2025, my son Joey DLC, Jr., who just turned 29, suffered a devastating hemorrhagic stroke. That morning, I knew something was wrong when he stood silently at my bedroom door, unable to speak as he usually did. Within minutes, he lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent three emergency brain surgeries. Since then, every day has been a struggle for Joey and our family. He lost mobility on his right side, had a bone flap removed from his skull and placed in his stomach, and now relies on a feeding tube. Simple daily tasks like changing his diapers, bathing, and transferring him from bed to wheelchair are extremely difficult and painful for both of us. The wheelchair we have is on loan and not suitable for his needs, and insurance delays have made it even harder to get the right equipment. Joey cannot sit upright for long, his right arm and leg need constant support, and he wears a protective helmet because his skull is not yet repaired. Communication is a daily challenge, as he struggles to speak, and he only receives limited therapy through insurance.
Joey has always been a bright light in our family. Despite being born with special needs, he was active and independent—enjoying video games, bowling, movies, and family vacations. He loved spending time with his nephews and keeping our family close. Now, seeing him in pain and unable to do the things he loves is heartbreaking. Our family has come together to care for him, but the emotional and financial toll is overwhelming. We need specialized equipment: a custom wheelchair, a wheelchair-accessible van, transfer and exercise equipment, braces, a suction pump, a ramp, and a walk-in shower. These items are essential for Joey’s comfort, safety, and rehabilitation, but we simply cannot afford them all on our own.
Bringing Joey home from the nursing facility was the only way to ensure he received the care and love he deserves. Every day, we work together to help him regain his strength and independence. Joey is a fighter—he never gives up, and neither will we. Your support will help us provide the equipment and therapy he needs to recover, regain his dignity, and return to the activities he loves. We are deeply grateful for any help you can offer to give Joey the best chance at recovery and a brighter future.
