Hi, I’m Chelsea
TL;DR:
A lifelong battle with severe gastrointestinal disease has led to the loss of nearly all my teeth. My only option is full-mouth reconstruction with implant-supported dentures—most of which is not covered by insurance. I’m asking for help to afford this life-changing procedure.
I need your help…
If you’re here reading this—thank you. Your support, encouragement, and love are the reasons I’m still here today. I’m so grateful.
My Medical Journey
Since childhood, I’ve lived with severe gastroparesis and GERD, along with related autoimmune issues. For many years, I relied on feeding tubes to survive. I slept hooked up to machines, carried medical backpacks to school, and endured long periods of pain and uncertainty.
In 2017, I was lucky enough to be part of a clinical trial for a then-new surgery called G-POEM (Gastric Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy)—a procedure that changed my life. I was able to eat again and gain some independence. I went back to school, earned two degrees, and started graduate school in atmospheric science.
But even with that miracle, my health has never been simple. I still receive regular treatments, like endoscopic Botox injections to help my stomach work, and I experience painful flare-ups that affect my whole body—especially my esophagus, teeth, and mental health.
Why I Need Help Now
Over the past 6 years, the long-term effects of my condition have caused catastrophic dental damage. Years of acid exposure from GERD and nutritional struggles weakened my teeth. I’ve had multiple root canals, infections, and breakages. In 2017, a generous hometown dentist crowned many of my teeth pro bono, but those “teeth” are now little more than fragile rods. Many have broken or become severely infected.
Recently, I received the news I’ve long feared: what’s left must be removed.
The only viable long-term solution is implant-supported dentures. Unfortunately, these are considered “cosmetic” and most of the cost is not covered by insurance. Since my case is medical, medical and dental insurance are being used, but a large majority of the cost is out of pocket.
The problem is, we simply do not have the money. This procedure, even with insurance, is obscenely expensive. I unfortunately have no choice but to ask for help.
Why This Matters
Despite everything, I’ve built a life I love. I was recently on a research expedition to Antarctica (thankfully the medical did not require dental screening) and continue my work in climate science. The truth is, I’ve been fighting silently behind the scenes—often in pain and embarrassed to smile, eat in front of others. Getting this dental work will not only allow me to eat and speak properly, but it will give me back a piece of myself I’ve lost.
How You Can Help
We’re working with insurance and exploring all financial aid options, but there’s still a significant uncovered cost. Your support will help cover:
• Surgical removal of remaining teeth
• Implant-supported dentures
• Specialist care not covered by insurance
Every donation helps, no matter the size. And if you can’t donate, simply sharing my story means more than you know.
With love and deepest gratitude,
Chels
