I am excited to announce that I have finally been scheduled for top surgery (or “chest masculinization surgery”) on July 18! As a non-binary trans masculine individual, this is something I have been dreaming of since I was fourteen years old — before I even had words to describe my gender experience!
Accessing gender affirming care has often felt like a pipe dream. I knew very few people who had had top surgery in my 20s and their experiences were hard won, prohibitively expensive, and required intense self advocacy before a panel of doctors and psychologists. Every step also required stable housing, stable health insurance, exorbitant amounts of money, community care, and a psychological toughness I just didn’t have until now. This gender affirming care is FIVE YEARS in the making, and I could not be more excited.
