Hello, friends, family, acquaintances, and anyone else who comes along this page!
(TLDR; My best friend, Bethany, needs surgery after an accident as it’s believed she has nerve and tendon damage where her left thumb is. Without surgery, she would be living with constant numbness and tingling for the rest of her life.)
My best friend, Bethany, is needing surgery on her hand after accidentally cutting herself while she was helping one of her friends move. The orthopedic doctor she saw isn’t hopeful it would get much better without surgery and believes she damaged two parts of her thumb after Bethany was unable to know what was touching her with her eyes closed. She is believed to have a left thumb dorsal laceration, a dorsal radial sensory nerve laceration, and a partial EPL laceration. (See the attached photos for more information)
If she waits up to 6 months to see if it heals anymore, the doctor thinks only about 10% more feeling would come back at most, and it would be too late to repair the nerves by that point. Without the surgery, she wouldn’t have much feeling for the rest of her life and would constantly have numbness and tingling.
Surgery would mean knowing the extent of the damage and repairing and guiding the nerves to where they need to be. She would require some PT afterwards as well. She’s been told she would be able to use her hand within 3-4 weeks, but it would take up to 6 months to gain all of the feeling back. There is about a 90% chance everything will be ok afterwards.
Surgery alone would likely be between $1100-1500 out of pocket. In addition to those costs, she is taking a $2600 loss in income and is needing to pay for first aid supplies to keep it protected, PT afterwards, etc.
Anyone who knows Bethany knows she is a very hard worker who is often sacrificially giving and serving everyone and anyone as she’s able. She never asks for anything in return and is often reluctant to come to anyone for help for anything herself.
If any of you are willing to help support her through prayer and/or a donation, it would be such a great blessing blessing to her and to the community she impacts!
