My name is Thomas Boehm and this is my fiancée and soon-to-be wife, and her 13-year-old son.
Last year, around the first of February, he was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis and was in a coma for about a month. He recuperated from the coma and was put on a controlled diet and insulin therapy.
His mom lost her job, and with me not living with them, she couldn’t afford the medication he needed. With no insurance and not qualifying for state insurance, he’s been struggling to keep his blood sugar in check.
The last few days, he’s been having issues, and today he was having difficulty breathing and a slow heartbeat. My fiancée took him to the hospital in Owensboro, KY (I’m in Jonesboro, AR), and they gave her a not-so-promising diagnosis. They told her he has an infection in the blood system similar to sepsis and gave her around 72 hours if certain procedures and medication weren’t delivered immediately. They have life-flighted him to Vanderbilt in Nashville.
I’m on Social Security, and currently, she doesn’t have insurance to cover the costs. That’s why I’m here asking for assistance so she and my soon-to-be stepson can get the care he needs and hopefully he will beat whatever is actually taking him and his health. I have no idea how long he will be down or if this is something that might take him away from us.
One thing I do know is she has gone through a lot in the last two years. Her mother passed away in 2023 just after we met. She ended up losing her home when the landlord decided to sell. Then she lost her job after he was diagnosed with DKA and was treated in Chicago, requiring her to be with him (legal guardian caring for a minor child).
She found another job in Lexington, which lasted for several months, when her sister asked her to help take care of her kids in exchange for room and board while she was working out of town as a sales representative for a jewelry company. Right after she returned home, she learned she had an aggressive form of cancer and passed away around Thanksgiving last year, leaving her kids in her care while she awaited their father stepping up to take care of the kids one way or another.
We have been trying to get together for three years, and we were on track to make that connection within the next few weeks, and now this had to happen. We just need the help for his medical until we find out what is taking place. Hopefully, by the Grace of God, he will be spared and we can get the insurance that will provide for his medicine and other needs.
