A Mother’s Battle: Erica’s Diabetes Journey

**** I did not post a personal picture due to privacy reasons. My personal story will be below. Thank you for your understanding.****

My name is Erica. I am a 33-year-old mother of a sweet little boy and 4 beautiful fur babies. I am also a survivor of a near-fatal car accident and pre-cervical cancer shortly after my accident.

Ever since my car accident, it has been a domino effect on my health. It has been one thing after another. I have had three additional life-saving surgeries since the car accident.

Shortly after my near-fatal car accident, I chose to go back to work. That being said, I spent 9 years too long overworking my fragile body further into the ground. Keep in mind I was fighting for my disability behind the scenes. I finally got approved at the beginning of the year.

Upon leaving my very last job in Dec. 2024, I was finally approved for Medicaid through the Department of Children and Families here in Florida. Yay! I can finally get my laundry list of medical issues worked on again.

In February of 2025, my PCP added to that laundry list with a new diagnosis. He confirmed I was a Type 1 diabetic, which means non-insulin independent. He prescribed me Mounjaro.

Mounjaro has been successful in treating my Type 1 diabetes. But unfortunately, at the end of May 2025, I lost my full coverage Medicaid and was placed on medical share cost. Why? The Department of Children and Families here in Florida said I made way too much a month. But the Social Security office told me I do not make enough and has said I would be eligible for full coverage Medicaid till September 2026, that is when I would be eligible for Medicare.

The Social Security office cannot get involved because they are federal and Medicaid is state. The Social Security office has told me to call the Governor of Florida. I did reach out to the Governor’s office but was told to reach out to the OIG Investigation Office.

I have called the OIG Investigation Office, gave them the same story, but now I am waiting to hear back from a higher-up. If nothing gets through to these people, I will be forced to file a lawsuit.

Y’all may be wondering why go to such extremes. Well, my monthly check would cover just the Mounjaro alone, which means I would not be able to attend any medically necessary appointments because I would have no money left.

So, I was blessed to find a private insurance to ease some of the financial burden. Yet, they will not cover Mounjaro due to a lawsuit. So, my doctor has placed me on Ozempic for my Type 1 diabetes.

My private insurance company will cover it, but it is $1,042.75, a month which is my whole monthly check, which means I would not be able to afford my medical insurance and other financial obligations. I was able to find a savings card to bring it down to $891.25 a month, but that is still steep for me. I have appointments and other financial obligations to cover.

I hate to ask for help but I need help covering my medication cost till I can get this Medicaid situation sorted out. I do not want to end up a Type 2 diabetic because that could be a bigger problem or even lead to death. Why? my current medical conditions and family genetics.

So, if anyone has a caring heart and just few extra dollars to spare that would be greatly appreciated. If you do not feel comfortable donating and would rather reach out to my local pharmacy to put some money on the medication please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

thank you and bless you.

Tranding Fundraisers

I’ve created this fundraiser on behalf of my dear friends, Sarah and James, who are enduring every parent’s worst nightmare — the loss of their beloved son, Leo.

We’re heartbroken to share that our dear friend Alex passed away far too soon. His light, his laughter, his incredible spirit — they touched so many, and his absence is deeply felt.

Hi everyone — Angela here, writing on behalf of Matthew (for now). On December 6th, completely out of the blue, Matthew suffered a severe stroke.
